Fighting the aging process with vitamins and supplements has been gaining popularity over the last 50 years. These anti aging vitamins and supplements range from everyday multivitamins to products that claim to increase levels of certain hormones or to reduce certain chemicals found it the human body in the body to make people more youthful. There are certain benefits and risks involved in taking these vitamins and supplements.

The benefits of taking vitamins is still being debated by scientists and doctors; however the general consensus seems to be that, when taken properly, they at least are not generally harmful. Some of the vitamins can build up to toxic levels in the human body. Any of the fat-soluble vitamins can reach dangerous levels if taken in excessive amounts. For example, Vitamin A is stored in the liver and fat cells of the human body and can reach toxic levels. DO NOT take more than the recommended dosage of Vitamin A.

Water-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin B and Vitamin C are not stored in the body and the excess amount ingested will be passed in the urine. In fact you can see and smell excess Vitamin B being passed after taking a large dosage of it.

The shelves of vitamins offered in many different types of stores today are full of many different types of supplements including multivitamins and vitamins sold on their own (i.e. vitamin E or vitamin A supplements), or a few different supplements similar in nature being sold in one pill (i.e. vitamin B complex).

Since the body will not store the water-soluble vitamins it would be a good idea to take these supplements if your dietary habits are not well balanced. Some type of diets will restrict certain type of foods, which could also reduce your intake of vitamins, and minerals that your body requires for optimum health.

The danger of taking vitamin supplements occurs when the fat-soluble vitamins and certain minerals are contained in different pills that you may be taking or if you are on the supplements for an extended period of time. This overlapping of intake and length of time can lead to an overdose, which can cause damage to some of the organs in the human body such as the liver when taking to much Vitamin A.

To prevent injury from this type of situation, consumers should check with their doctors before starting any medications, even over the counter anti aging supplements, or supplements of any kind.

As we get older certain vitamins are no longer available to us in the required amounts. This is caused by the reduction of food intake and because our bodies are no longer as efficient in process all of the foods that we ingest. Up to one-third of older people can no longer absorb Vitamin B from their food. Vitamin B is needed to form red blood cells and keep nerves healthy.

Many of us do not realize the changes that are taking place on our body and face. Sometimes we look at our old photographs and realize how much we have changed. Age brings changes. We don’t realize them because we see ourselves everyday. When you meet a friend after many years, both of you may utter at the same time - how much have you changed! That is aging. To
keep yourself looking young, you have to fight wrinkles everyday, so that next time when you meet someone after many years, they will exclaim- you have not changed at all.

How do wrinkles form? What are the ways to avoid wrinkles and what to do about wrinkles that cannot be stopped? How to maintain the youth? Let us find out.

Wrinkles- how do they form?

As you know, our skin is made of three layers - the epidermis, the dermis and the underlying fat layer. As we grow, the skin deteriorates and loses its youth because of genetic programming. This programming also makes our hair white and makes our teeth fall as we age. We cannot stop this genetic change. Sun damage takes toll of the skin and the skin ages much faster because of that. Two persons of same age may have skin with different aging. One who has moved around in the sun freely will show much more damage on the skin compared to one who has protected his/her skin from sun. Calorie Restriction For Anti Aging

From an evolutionary point of view, skipping a meal here and there would be beneficial to the human body. After all the human body was designed to go for days without eating anything. In today’s society we have constant access to food and we are taking in calories all day long. Calorie restriction is also known as the anti aging diet; it is based on the theory that by eating far less calories we will be able to slow down the aging process.

A 2006 article in the Journal of American Medical Association suggested that by periodically restricting our caloric intake to as little as 890 calories a day, or fasting, resulted in a decrease in insulin levels and body temperatures, another two biomarkers of longevity. Restricting calories helps to eliminate the free radicals by burning off more calories than you take in thus reducing the amount of fat stored in the human body.

During a research study conducted in 1934, Clive McCay and Mary Crowell used calorie restriction diets to determine the effects on the aging process. They noticed that when laboratory rats were fed all the needed nutrients but the calories in their diets were drastically cut, the rats lived up to twice as long as the rats that was not on this specialized diet. These results have proven consistent over all animals tested.

Tests on the higher primates are currently underway, but due to their long lifespan results do not yet exist. Certain tests are also being conducted on human volunteers and again, due to the long lifespan of our species, these test are sill underway.

The anti aging diet requires that the person restrict their diet on a large degree. Eating a diet that is full of fruits, vegetables, fish, and chicken is one way to start. Avoiding processed foods and certain fats has been shown to improve a persons’ overall health. A specialized diet is required for the calorie restriction diet. It’s not just cutting back on a meal here and there. This brings up the possible danger of not getting the necessary nutrients a person needs to live in a healthy manner.

Common Vitamins and over the counter products can help with aging such as Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Antioxidants.

Up to one-third of older people can no longer absorb Vitamin B from their food. All of the different Vitamin Bs taken together as B-Complex work together as a team to perform vital biological processes, such as energy production and efficient metabolic function. Vitamin B boost energy levels and help fight fatigue.

Vitamin C is nature’s protective nutrient, essential for defending the body against pollution and infection and enhances the bodies’ immune system. Take 1,000 to 5,000 mg daily.

Vitamin D is manufactured in the skin following direct exposure to sunlight. Many studies show that Vitamin D production decreases in older people and in those who are housebound. Vitamin D is needed by the body to absorb calcium, which makes your bones stronger and helps prevent factures.

Vitamin E supplies Oxygen to the heart and the other muscles in the body. Accelerates wound healing and aids in the functioning of the immune system.

Substances called Antioxidants can neutralize free radical by pairing up or binding with the free radical elections thus inhibiting them from damaging cells in the human body. Natural Antioxidants are abundant in fruits and vegetables such as, apples, blueberries, broccoli, cherries, cranberries, Grapes, spinach, and Spirulina a blue-green algae.

Over 40 Skin to Die For

Is it all in the genes - or can we do anything to prevent the deep lines and dry skin from aging us prematurely? In our youth we felt our baby-soft skin was invincible, and we spent hours basking in the sun and tanning our bodies to a golden brown hue.

Want to start looking better quickly? Be sure you’re using the right treatments. You need to know what type of skin you have. Most of us begin life with normal skin. Through the years, the environment, what we eat and drink, hormones, and other factors contribute to changes and challenges. There are three types of skin: dry, oily, and combination.

Dry skin has a fine texture with small pores. It often feels “tight”, and is prone to broken capillaries. Dry skin should be kept away from weather extremes, especially harsh winds. Don’t bother with soap. In the morning, dry skin only needs a splash of water to remove excess oils. Don’t use any toners containing alcohol. Witch Hazel is the perfect toner for dry skin. Always follow up with a rich moisturizer. Use a mild cold cream at night to remove makeup and to cleanse.

Oily skin has large and visible pores. The oil is especially prominent on the nose, forehead, and chin. The skin is prone to blemishes and blackheads. Although it seems logical to get at these eruptions with aggressive products, this only makes oily skin worse. There is not a better cleanser than powdered milk mixed with water. It is a lactic acid wash that will not only cleanse the skin, but also exfoliate debris. Lemons are a great toner to keep on hand to restore the pH balance. Finish with an oil-free moisturizer. Although it may not seem necessary to use moisturizer at all if your skin is extremely oily, you should always moisturize under your eyes. Use an eye gel, not a cream.

Combination skin is actually two skin types on one face. Skin is usually oily only in the T-zone of the face (nose, forehead, and chin) while dry elsewhere. Don’t be overly aggressive with the oily area and neglect the dry spots. Use powdered milk to wash and exfoliate, use lemon toner only in the T-zone, then concentrate moisturizing to the dry zones.

The body’s cells can handle the normal cellular activity of this oxidation but it cannot handle all the extra free radicals cause by our lifestyles. Therefore the extra free radicals in the cells cause ill health, degenerative diseases, and toxicity. To help neutralize the free radicals it is strongly suggested that we supplement our diets with antioxidants. In fact nutrition is “the best” basis for a healthy body and therefore anti aging.

With advanced nutrition and supplementation we can fight these free radicals, the aging accelerators, by giving our body all it needs to remain healthy and receive the optimum nutrition from our diets, and even REVERSE some of the signs of aging. Of course, as has been pointed out earlier, the refined and processed foods we eat have no where near enough nutrients to supply what our bodies need. That is why we have the need for nutritional supplementation.
