We all want healthy bodies; bodies where everything functions smoothly, but
having a healthy body depends on a balance between a good healthy diet
and depends on a delicate balance between substances known as anti-oxidants
and free radicals. Many get confused when it comes to these terms but simply
stated : when free radicals get the upper hand the results can be disastrous.
Free radicals actually cause in our bodies which is known as oxidation.
Oxidation is actually linked to the development of arthritis, Alzheimer’s
disease and other chronic conditions.
It is interesting because on one hand anti oxidants do harm and on the other
hand, anti-oxidants do a lot of good in our bodies. They react chemically with
these free radicals and render them harmless. There has been a lot of study
recently where the syudy is based around healthy diets. Normally these are
rich in brightly coloured plants such as red peppers, oranges and broccoli.
We now have lots of data and reseach which tells us how there is is a major
link between diet and arthritis as eating various kinds of fruits and
vegetables can be beneficial to health.
By now I trust most of you are aware of the dangers of trans fatty acids (TFAs). These oils are hydrogenated to increase their shelf life. During this process the oils break down and the TFAs created pose many dangers to your health including heart disease and cancer. They also lower “good” HDL cholesterol and raise “bad” LDL cholesterol.
“TFAs may also have adverse effects on cell membranes and the immune system, and may promote inflammation and aging” according to Dr. Andrew Weil. Increasing research proves that inflammation is a significant factor in an incredible number of diseases.
To better your health and extend your life, you’ll want to reduce or eliminate trans fatty acids from your diet.
The first step is a thorough kitchen cleansing. Go through your cupboards, pantry, refrigerator and freezer and start reading labels. Look for the words “hydrogenated oils”, “partially hydrogenated oils”, “margarine” and “vegetable shortening”. When you find any of these words, toss the offending item directly into the trash bin.
Do not hesitate. Yes, you spent money on these foods and it feels wasteful. But the money and suffering you will save later in hospital visits well outweighs the cost of that pack of cookies.
Next, become a grocery store detective. I never buy anything without reading the ingredients label first. This is even more important, in my opinion, then the Nutrition Label. I like to know exactly what I’m putting into my body. Knowledge is power.
As you get started in your detective work you may be surprised how hard it is to find foods without hydrogenated oils in certain parts of the supermarket.
It’s not impossible though. As consumers are becoming more educated, food manufacturers are trying harder to meet this new demand. If you do take the time to read labels, you can find alternative versions of your favorite foods. Look for 0g next to Trans Fats on the Nutrition Label.
Of course the best way to avoid trans fatty acids and other toxins is to reduce or eliminate processed foods from your diet. Fast foods and baked goods are the best sources of these dangerous oils.
So leave the bright, shiny packages on their shelves. Do most of your shopping in the fresh food aisles of your grocery store and choose lots of organic fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and lean protein. You’ll make a tremendous difference to your health.

People with oily skins are easily recognizable from their perpetually shiny faces. You will notice the shine on their nose, forehead and chins. Most of the time, they will also have blackheads and pimples and other embarrassing blemishes in these parts of their faces. Oily skin is caused by excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands of the skin. Sebum is a natural oily substance produced by the skin to keep it moist. However, excessive production of sebum leads to clogging of the skin pores. Clogged skin pores accumulate dead skin cells and bacteria, leading to the formation of blackheads and pimples, which can be very traumatizing. It is therefore very vital to take good care of oily skin. The following beauty tips should provide some guidance on the care for oily skin.
First and foremost, skin care for oily skin should focus on removing the excess sebum from the skin. The skin, especially the face should be washed in hot medicated water or with soap, to remove oils and dirt particles. Hot water dissolves sebum more readily than warm water. Washing should be followed by thorough cleaning using a cleanser containing salicylic acid. Make sure the cleanser is not a harsh cleanser. Oily skin can be very sensitive and a cleanser which removes excess sebum can cause an adverse reaction which causes the skin to produce more sebum to compensate for the loss. This condition is known as reactive seborrhea, and will bring about more oiliness and its accompanying complications. The skin should be cleansed only twice or three times a day. More frequent cleansing will remove too much oil from the skin and this is not desirable.
After cleansing of the skin, should the skin condition permit, a moisturizer may be applied. For very oily skin, there may be no need for a moisturizer. If you decide to use a moisturizer, make sure it does not contain any oils, lipids or waxes.
Always purchase and use cosmetics and skin care products specifically designed for oily skin. There are certain products which are designed for all skin types but these will only be suitable for those with a mild oily skin condition. For those with really oily skins, only products indicated for oily skin will suffice.
Before applying makeup, use an antiseptic day cream with active ingredients which diminish the secretion of sebum. Benzyl peroxide is an ingredient you should look out for.
Apply a clay or mud mask frequently. It helps to absorb oils deep in the skin. Blend one tea spoon of clay powder and one tea spoon raw honey. Apply this mix on the face avoiding the areas around the eyes. Leave it there for fifteen minutes then rinse with warm water.
Avoid touching or brushing your fingers over your face. This will only help to spread bacteria into the pores causing infections which lead to inflammation, blackheads and pimples. Under no circumstances should you attempt to burst pimples. These will only lead to infection which will result in ugly scarring of the face.
The above remedies should prove helpful in the management of oily skin. Should the condition prove persistent and unmanageable, a visit to a dermatologist for specialized attention is advised. However, for most cases, this will not be necessary. There is even a positive side to oily skin. As one gets older, the one with oily skin continues looking younger much longer. This is because oily skin does not age as fast.
WHO (World Health Organization) defines health as a state of complete mental, physical, and social well-being; not only the absence of infirmity or disease.
It is well said and well proven that there is always a healthy mind in a healthy body. Better health is directly related to a person’s well being — mentally and socially too. By maintaining good health, you’ll not only feel better about yourself, but you’ll also live well too.
Following a healthy diet is crucial to a better health because a good diet helps to prevent critical diseases such as obesity, heart attacks, and strokes. A good diet will also be helpful to treat diabetes, high blood pressure, and celiac disease. And if you need to prevent vitamin deficiency and loss of muscle strength, you have to eat a well-balanced diet and exercise regularly.
Heart attacks and obesity are two major health problems for people living in today’s high stress working environment. Unfortunately, most of the working people eat high calorie food that their body usually does not burn. As a result of their high calorie intake, these people tend to have less physical exercise, which finally results into obesity. Obesity can then lead to other diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, high blood pressure just to name a few.
To prevent obesity and maintain a healthy weight you need to eat low calorie food. Fruits and vegetables are great energy food, which you can eat in a large amount without thinking of calories. Vegetables and fruits contains large amount of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, proteins and fats necessary for healthy bones, organs, muscles and nerves. Vitamins and minerals found in green leaves and juicy fruits are essential for normal body metabolism.
Clearly, eating a well-balanced diet which includes fruits and vegetables are an important part of a good diet. Everyone can benefit from eating more of them, and eating a variety of them is as important as the quantity you consumed. Most importantly, it’s critical to also include regular exercise into your well-balanced diet if you want to maintain a health body.

When so diagnosed, the disease must be controlled energetically so that its complications are either prevented or treated. While treating diabetes, one must keep in mind that control of diet and exercise are two important tools in conquering this serious problem.
Patients are advised to take low-fat, low-calorie, sugar free / restricted and high-fibre diet. A low-fat diet is especially required when one has higher levels of blood cholesterol. In general also, a low-fat diet is recommended for preventing the complications of diabetes, especially coronary artery disease / stroke. It may be mentioned that diabetes is a disease of the blood vessels.
In addition to a low-fat diet, the patient should avoid sugar, sweets and very sweet fruits. A high-fibre diet, which diabetics are advised to take, consists of green vegetables-cooked/ salad, whole wheat, cereals, unpolished rice, etc. It is the outer covering of grain i.e. bran, which helps in the control of diabetes. Green vegetables, besides being a high-fibre diet, also contain very low calories, and hence can be used, by diabetics in larger quantity so as to satisfy their appetite.
As regards exercise for the control of diabetes, diabetics are advised to take exercise according to the recommendation of the physician. If a diabetic is suffering from anyone or more complications of the disease, especially coronary artery disease, he/she should take only limited exercise for its control. In uncomplicated cases, especially in young age, even vigorous exercise can be taken. Ideally, light exercise, especially walking after meals, is very useful for most diabetics, as blood sugar is raised after taking food, and walking will control its higher levels, reducing or completely eliminating the use of antidiabetic drugs. However, walking should be taken in a pleasant atmosphere, say in the evening/night after food, and should not be taken after lunch, especially in summer.
In case diabetes is not, controlled by diet and exercise, only then drugs i.e. insulin (administered by injection) or oral drugs should be started in minimal dosages, and the patient should be again detailed about the diet and exercise, as it will reduce the dose of antidiabetic drugs. It is important to point out that the dose of antidiabetic drugs should be properly adjusted to avoid low blood sugar, causing unconsciousness. However, a diabetic may also become unconscious when the level of blood sugar is markedly elevated, say above 400 mg/ dl.
It is worth mentioning that even if the glucose tolerance test (GTT) is impaired (i.e. the level of the test does not indicate a case of diabetes), particularly if the range of the level of the test is close to the diabetic level, the patient must be advised regarding the value of diet and exercise so as to correct the impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). Small dosages of oral antidiabetic drugs may have to be advocated in cases where the diet and exercise regimen fail. If this step is not carefully followed, cases of IGT are likely to become regular diabetics sooner or later. Even if the level is on the lower side of the range, as in the above situation, the patient must be advised to strictly follow the regimen of diet and exercise. Early intervention is necessary to check the progress and complications of the disease.
For rabid fans of the New York Giants and New England Patriots, this Sunday’s Super Bowl won’t be just a game. It may be a health hazard. Heart attacks and other cardiac emergencies doubled in Munich, Germany, when that nation’s soccer team played in World Cup matches, a new study reports.
While history suggests European soccer fans can get a bit more worked up than the average American football fan, doctors think there are some valid warnings to be shared.
“I know a little bit about the Super Bowl,” study author Dr. Gerhard Steinbeck of Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich said in a telephone interview. “It’s reasonable to think that something quite similar might happen.”
He and his colleagues present their results in Thursday’s New England Journal of Medicine. They blamed emotional stress for the heart problems, but they note that lack of sleep, overeating, wolfing down junk food, boozing and smoking might have played a role too.
Previous studies suggest that events like earthquakes and war can boost the risk of heart problems. Findings for soccer have been inconsistent.
The new work “confirms something people have been highly skeptical about … that soccer (would) produce that kind of emotional investment that might trigger a heart attack,” said psychologist Douglas Carroll of the University of Birmingham in England.
“People who are not interested in sport find it very difficult to comprehend this,” said Carroll, who in 2002 reported a link between World Cup soccer and heart attacks in England.
The new paper included heart attacks, cardiac arrests, episodes of irregular heartbeat and activations of automatic implanted defibrillators. The researchers noted the number of cases reported in the greater Munich area during World Cup competition in Germany in the summer of 2006. They compared that to the totals for similar periods in 2003 and 2005, and for several weeks before and after the tournament.
In all, the study included 4,279 patients. Analysis showed that on the seven days when the German team played, the overall number of cardiac emergencies was more than double the norm. For men, it tripled.
The effect was strongest in people with known heart disease. So on Super Bowl Sunday, such people and others with known risks for heart disease — like high blood pressure or diabetes — should take extra care of themselves, said Dr. Lori Mosca, director of preventive cardiology at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
She said that means:
• Take medications as prescribed.
• Avoid tobacco smoke and fatty meals.
• Get plenty of sleep the night before.
• Don’t over-exert yourself physically.
• If you drink alcohol, limit yourself to one drink for a woman and two for a man.
• Try “not to get too angry with the refs.”
People with known heart conditions should also keep their nitroglycerin and aspirin handy, she said.
And if heart symptoms appear, she said, call emergency services right away. “Don’t just chew that aspirin and think it’ll go away.”
In fact, research by Dr. David Jerrard, an associate professor of emergency medicine at the University of Maryland, indicates that some men do put off seeking emergency treatment if they’re watching a game.
On a typical Super Bowl Sunday, “the number of patients waiting to be seen dries up dramatically,” Jerrard said. But delaying that visit to stick with a sportscast is a bad idea, especially for people with a history of heart trouble, he says.
“Much of the chest pain or upper abdominal pain that people might be experiencing is mostly likely related to the food they’re eating, the alcohol they’re ingesting,” he said. “But of course, you never know.”

If you have ever wondered how to get rid of blackheads, this action plan will help you out. Not only will it help clear your blackheads, but it will treat all of the acne that you might have.
It’s no mystery that there are hundreds of different acne treatment products out there. Take a quick look in the drugstore and you will see dozens of different products that claim to “zap zits” and clear your skin. Problem is - they hardly ever work!
The problem with the products you find in the stores is that they don’t fight your acne from the right angles. They simply try to get rid of pimples that have already sprung to life instead of working to prevent new acne. There’s no point in fighting to treat one zit when you know another one is on the way.
The only way to actually cure your acne is to treat all of the causes of acne. You can’t expect to get clear skin if you aren’t actually addressing what causes your pimples!
Most products ignore this fact. The truth is that it takes more than just a little cream to fix the problem. You need to find a full treatment “system” that attacks your acne from all angles.
You want to make sure that your treatment fights acne at the root of the problem. You need something that eliminates excess oil on your skin, controls future oil production, unclogs your pores, kills off acne-causing bacteria on your skin and treats any inflammation your skin might be experiencing.
It’s amazing to see how quickly you can get results once you treat all of the above. You will see results in just a few days and your skin will keep clearing up until your acne is no longer an issue. The key is to get started and to make sure your acne treatment system treats all of the causes of acne.
It’s important not to get discouraged if you have tried something in the past that didn’t work. Knowing how to get rid of blackheads and other forms of acne isn’t always easy considering how many products are available that don’t work in the longrun. Once you treat all of the causes of acne, your skin will clear up in no time. All the best!
Although the majority of acne products fail to actually do this, there a few “winners” that have been proven to do the job. You can read reviews of some of these treatments at http://www. fastacnetreatments. com.
