Colin Powell Endorses Obama For President

Sunday 19 October 2008 @ 10:42 am

In this article I will consider the social, economic and political factors of powell endorses obama. In depth analysis of powell endorses obama can be an enriching experience. Given that its influence pervades our society, it is yet to receive proper recognition for laying the foundations of democracy. It is an unfortunate consequence of our civilizations history that powell endorses obama is rarely given rational consideration by those politicaly minded individuals living in the past, who just don’t like that sort of thing. Hold onto your hats as we begin a journey into powell endorsing obama.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell announced Sunday that he will be voting for Sen. Barack Obama. “He has both style and substance. I think he is a transformational figure,” Powell said on NBC’s Meet the Press.

“Obama displayed a steadiness. Showed intellectual vigor. He has a definitive way of doing business that will do us well,” Powell said.

Powell said McCain has been a good friend for 25 years. But Powell expressed disappointment in the negative tone of McCain’s campaign, as well as in his choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

“Now that we have had a chance to watch her for some seven weeks, I don’t believe she’s ready to be president of the United States, which is the job of the vice president,” Powell said. “And so that raised some question in my mind as to the judgment that Senator McCain made.”

He also said he was disappointed with some of McCain’s campaign tactics, such as bringing up Obama’s ties to former 1960s radical Bill Ayers.

Powell said he does not plan to campaign for Obama.

Following the interview, Powell told reporters outside NBC’s Washington studio: “I think that Senator Obama brings a fresh set of eyes, fresh set of ideas to the table. I think that Senator McCain, as gifted as he is, is essentially going to execute the Republican agenda, the orthodoxy of the Republican agenda with a new face and a maverick approach to it, and he’d be quite good at it, but i think we need more than that. I think we need a generational change. I think Senator Obama has captured the feelings of the young people of America and is reaching out in a more diverse, inclusive way across our society.”

Story continues below

It troubled me. We have two wars. We have economic problems. We have health problems. We have education problems. We have infrastructure problems. We have problems around the world with our allies. And so those are the problems the American people wanted to hear about, not about Mr. Ayers, not about who is a Muslim and who is not a Muslim. Those kinds of images going out on al Jazeera are killing us around the world. And we have got to say to the world it doesn’t make any difference who you are or what you are, if you’re an American you’re an American. And this business of, for example a congresswoman from Minnesota going around saying let’s examine all congressmen to see who is pro America or not pro America, we have got to stop this kind of non-sense and pull ourselves together and remember that our great strength is in our unity and diversity. That really was driving me.

Aside from their shared history as Republican military men, Powell’s endorsement is significant due to the fact that McCain has repeatedly singled him out for lavish praise. In a July New York Times interview, McCain described the former secretary of state and Joint Chiefs chairman as “a man who I admire as much as any man in the world, person in the world” when answering a question in which Powell was not brought up. Meanwhile, near the same time as that interview, McCain was reportedly considering Powell as a potential running mate.

McCain’s high opinion of Powell as one of the “most credible, most respected” men in America is not merely an election-year spasm, either. When asked in 2001 if he would have chosen Powell for a Cabinet position had he succeeded in his first presidential run, McCain said “oh, yes.” During two December 2000 appearances on NBC Nightly News, McCain described himself as “exuberant” over Powell’s selection as secretary of state, which he predicted would secure “a beneficial effect on the conduct of American foreign policy.” McCain added in another TV appearance that President Bush was “blessed” to have Powell working for him. In 2003, when Powell faced criticism from Newt Gingrich over his plan to travel to Syria, it was McCain who rose to the secretary’s defense on MSNBC’s Hardball, when he said: “I think it’s appropriate that Colin Powell is going there.”

Even at the end of Powell’s somewhat frustrating tenure in George W. Bush’s inner circle of policy advisers, McCain praised his overall performance, saying: “When he took the helm at the State Department nearly four years ago, I was confident that Secretary Powell would lead with honor and distinction … I have not been disappointed.” And in a CBS interview during this year’s primary race, McCain suggested that one of President Bush’s chief failures “was not to listen more to our military leadership, including people like General Colin Powell.”

The praise has not only run in one direction, as Powell described McCain the “toughest man I’ve ever met” last year. But in the end, what sounded like a compliment could have been the beginning of the end. During this summer’s conflict between Russia and Georgia, Powell criticized McCain for being, in essence, too mindlessly tough. When asked by CNN’s what McCain meant when he said “We are all Georgians now,” Powell demurred. “One candidate said that, and I’ll let the candidate explain it for himself.”

When pressed for further opinion, Powell distanced himself from McCain’s staunchly pro-Georgian line. “The fact of the matter is that you have to be very careful in a situation like this not just to leap to one side or the other until you take a good analysis of the whole situation,” Powell said, tamping down the rush to herald the rise of a new Soviet threat.

“The Russian Federation is not going to become the Soviet Union again. That movie failed at the box office. But they do have interests. And we have to think carefully about their interests.”
* * *

From Saturday:

“Retired Gen. Colin Powell, once considered a potential running mate for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), now may endorse his opponent, Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.),” Republican sources tell Politico’s Mike Allen. “But an air of mystery surrounds Powell’s planned live appearance Sunday on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ and no one is sure what he will say.”

Powell’s unassailable national security credentials could sway voters who are vacillating about whether Obama is ready to be commander in chief, and his endorsement of the Illinois senator would make a national security emphasis by McCain in the election’s closing days extremely difficult.

Powell, 71, a professional soldier for 35 years, has advised the last three Republican presidents.

The general’s camp is being coy about what he might or might not say on Sunday. But some McCain advisers suspect, without being sure, that Powell will endorse Obama.

“It’s going to make a lot of news, and certainly be personally embarrassing for McCain,” a McCain official said. “It comes at a time when we need momentum, and it would create momentum against us.”

Tim Calhoun

Sunday 19 October 2008 @ 1:24 am

Let us commence a journey into the much travelled topic of tim calhoun. I really, really like tim calhoun. Cited by many as the single most important influence on post modern micro eco compartmentalism, it is important to remember that ‘what goes up must come down.’ Since it was first compared to antidisestablishmentarianism much has been said concerning tim calhoun by socialists, who just don’t like that sort of thing. Keeping all of this in mind, in this essay I will examine the major issues.

I am Tim Calhoun, and I am running for the office of Senator. A lot of people don’t know who Tim Calhoun is. So I’m going to tell you who Tim Calhoun is, and why I think Tim Calhoun should be next senator. I, Tim Calhoun, am… nice, trustworthy, genuine, likes music, dancer, aggressive… I have used a lot of some drugs, and some, not at all. Mainly pot and beer, but a little bit of cocaine. I’m real sorry about the cocaine, but there are times when I feel like partying and staying up real late, and cocaine can really help you do that. I am not married, so my sexual history is not relevent, but if you must know, I have some babies. Mainly by black ladies. But some by white. And a China-baby. I love whales, but they have to go. So I am going to organize a whaling party that will not stop until all whales are dead. America needs another big lake. In conclusion, and in summary, you can’t spell America without Tim Calhoun, and the letters “R,” “E,” and “A.”

Sarah Palin on snl

Sunday 19 October 2008 @ 1:12 am

Let us commence a journey into the much travelled topic of Sarah palin on snl. In depth analysis of Sarah palin on snl can be an enriching experience. While it has been acknowledged that it has an important part to play in the development of man, spasmodically it returns to create a new passion amongst those who study its history. Inevitably Sarah palin on snl is often misunderstood by socialists, many of whom blame the influence of television. Complex though it is I shall now attempt to provide an exaustive report on Sarah palin on snl and its numerous ‘industries’.

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin appeared on NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live,” along with Palin lookalike Tina Fey.

The show’s opening sketch featured a mock press conference with Fey reprising her role as the Alaska governor.

The piece then cut to a shot of Palin watching Fey’s performance on a television monitor with Lorne Michaels, the show’s executive producer.

“I just didn’t think it was a realistic depiction of the way my press conferences would have gone,” she said.

“Why couldn’t we have done the ‘30 Rock’ sketch that I wrote?” she asked, referring to the NBC comedy which stars Fey.

“Honestly, not enough people know that show,” Michaels responds.

The opening sketch also featured a surprise visit by Alec Baldwin, Fey’s “30 Rock” co-star Alec Baldwin, who mistook Palin for Fey, and tried to convince Michaels not to let Fey appear on the show with the governor. He snapped his fingers, trying to remember the nickname some had given Palin.

“Caribou Barbie,” Palin reminded him.

Baldwin, still oblivious that he was talking to the governor, continued: “You want her, our Tina, to go out there and stand there with that horrible woman,” he asked. “What do you have to say for yourself?”

Michaels points out he was standing next to the real Palin.

“Forgive me, I must say this,” Baldwin backtracked. “You are way hotter in person. I mean seriously. I mean, I can’t believe they let her play you.”

Palin laughed and responded that Baldwin’s brother, Stephen, was her favorite. Stephen Baldwin, also an actor, is a Christian conservative with his own ministry.

Palin then took the podium and told the reporters she was not going to take any of their questions.

She then uttered the signature line that opens the show every weekend: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night.”

Later in the show, Palin appeared on SNL’s “Weekend Update” with cast members Amy Poehler and Seth Meyers.

“I’ve been thinking it over and I’m not going to do the piece we rehearsed,” Palin told Meyers. “My gut is telling me it might be a bad idea for the campaign.”

Poehler said she would do the part and launched into a rap about being Sarah Palin. Among her backup dancers was cast member Jason Sukeikis who impersonated Palin’s husband, Todd.

Palin grooved along to the music, even raising her hands when Poehler sang “All the mavericks in the house, put your hands up! All the plumbers in the house, put your pants up!”

The plumber reference was meant to invoke the now-famous Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher, who Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain has held up as a small business owner who will see his taxes rise if his Democratic rival, Sen. Barack Obama, wins the election.

In both skits, Palin delivered her lines with a straight face but mostly played the comic foil to the show’s cast of mischief-makers.

On Thursday, multiple sources told CNN that Palin planned to appear on the hit show.

“Saturday Night Live” has featured three opening skits in which former cast member and Palin lookalike Tina Fey portrays the Alaska governor.

Fey first appeared as Palin for the show’s season premiere last month in a sketch with SNL cast member Amy Poehler, who played Sen. Hillary Clinton.

Fey reprised her role as Palin two weeks later, again alongside Poehler, who played CBS’s Katie Couric in a parody of Palin’s interview with the CBS anchor earlier that week.

Earlier this week, Palin told reporters that she’d love to appear on the show with Fey, The Associated Press reported.

“I love her, she’s a hoot and she’s so talented,” Palin said, according to the AP.

“It would be fun to meet her, imitate her and keep on giving her new material.”

Sarah Palin took a break from the campaign trail to appear on “Saturday Night Live” in two skits, where she watched Tina Fey (as Sarah Palin) in a skit about Palin’s first press conference alongside SNL honcho Lorne Michaels. Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg also made appearances in the opening sketch. Later in the show, she popped up during Weekend Update. Scroll down for Palin dancing in her seat to an Alaskan rap song.

Paul Newman; Legendary actor Paul Newman dies at 83

Saturday 27 September 2008 @ 5:02 pm

(CNN) — Paul Newman, the legendary actor whose steely blue eyes, good-humored charm and advocacy of worthy causes made him one of the most renowned figures in American arts, has died of cancer at his home in Westport, Connecticut. He was 83.

Paul Newman's handsome face and solid acting made him a popular and respected film star.

He died Friday, according to spokeswoman Marni Tomljanovic.

Newman attained stardom in the 1950s and never lost the movie-star aura, appearing in such classic films as “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “Exodus,” “The Hustler,” “Cool Hand Luke,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” “The Sting” and “The Verdict.”

He finally won an Oscar in 1986 — on his eighth try — for “The Color of Money,” a sequel to “The Hustler.” He later received two more Oscar nominations. Among his other awards was the Motion Picture Academy’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Newman was a Method-trained actor who blazed his own career trail and didn’t shy away from risky roles — inside and outside films.

A portrayal as a race-car driver in 1969’s “Winning” led to his actual competition in races; at 70, he participated in the 24 Hours of Daytona and he was still racing at age 80.

He stumped for liberal causes, including Eugene McCarthy’s 1968 presidential candidacy, and earned a spot on Richard Nixon’s enemies list — “the highest single honor I’ve ever received,” he said.

In 1982, Newman and his friend A.E. Hotchner founded Newman’s Own, a food company that produced food ranging from pasta sauces to salad dressing to chocolate chip cookies.

“The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is outgrossing my films,” Newman once wryly noted.

To date, the company — which donates all profits to charities such as Newman’s Hole in the Wall camps — has given away more than $200 million. Newman established the camp to benefit gravely ill children.

“He saw the camps as places where kids could escape the fear, pain and isolation of their conditions, kick back and raise a little hell,” Forrester said.

Today, there are 11 Hole in the Wall camps around the world, with additional programs in Africa and Vietnam. Some 135,000 children have attended the camps — free of charge.

The Association of Hole in the Wall Camps “is part of his living legacy, and for that we remain forever grateful,” the association said in a statement.

“We are greatly saddened by his passing. His leadership and spirit can never be replaced. But he has left us strong and confident.”

Newman was half of one of the most successful showbiz marriages — to Joanne Woodward, whom he married in 1958. He observed that just because he was a sex symbol there was no reason to commit adultery.

An essay on Paul Newman
Think back to the first time you ever heard of Paul Newman. In depth analysis of Paul Newman can be an enriching experience. While much has been written on its influence on contemporary living, there are just not enough blues songs written about Paul Newman. Crossing many cultural barriers it still draws remarks such as ‘I wouldn’t touch it with a barge pole’ and ‘i’d rather eat wasps’ from the over 50, who are yet to grow accustomed to its disombobulating nature. At the heart of the subject are a number of key factors. I plan to examine each of these factors in detail and and asses their importance.
Social Factors
Society is our own everyday reality. When Lance Bandaner said ‘twelve times I’ve traversed the ocean of youthful ambition but society still collects my foot prints’ [1] he could have been making a reference to Paul Newman, but probably not. Both tyranny and democracy are tried and questioned. Yet Paul Newman helps to provide some sort of equilibrium in this world of ever changing, always yearning chaos.
Did I mention how lovely Paul Newman is? It is intrinsically linked to adolescent inner acclimatisation.
Economic Factors
Our world is driven by supply and demand. We will begin by looking at the Lead-a-Duck-to-Water model. Taking special care to highlight the role of Paul Newman within the vast framework which this provides.
Oil
Prices
Paul Newman
The results displayed in the graph are too clear to be ignored. My personal view is that oil prices is in financial terms ‘holding hands with Paul Newman.’ What it all comes down to is money. Capitalists love Paul Newman.
Political Factors
Much of the writings of historians display the conquests of the most powerful nations over less powerful ones. Comparing Paul Newman and much of what has been written of it can be like comparing Paul Newman now, and its equivalent in the 1800s.
In the words of a legend in their own life time, Maximilian Skank ‘I don’t believe in ghosts, but I do believe in democracy.’ [2] Considered by many to be one of the ‘Founding Fathers’ of Paul Newman, his words cannot be over-looked. It would be wise to approach the subject with the thought that ‘if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all’. However this can lead to missing out important facts.
One thing’s certain. The Human species liberally desires Paul Newman, and what’s more human than politics?
Conclusion
In summary, Paul Newman may not be the best thing since sliced bread, but it’s still important. It sings a new song, provides financial security and never hides.
I will leave the last word to the famous Courteney Kournikova: ‘Oooh yeah Paul Newman shoo badaby dooo.’ [3]

Jessica Simpson: Should She Stick to Shoes?

Thursday 11 September 2008 @ 11:26 pm

Jessica Simpson appeared on Good Morning America where she performed hit songs With You and Pray Out Loud. Jessica Simpson seems to be repackaging herself as a country singer. Yet her performances were lackluster. After listening to her, I wondered how those songs were able to hit quadruple platinum.

During her performance of With You, she stopped the band midway through. As Jessica Simpson said, “I know this is live television but could we just start it again and do it this way?” This stopping and starting reminded me of Brooke White from American Idol. Brooke White famously stopped the band during her performances, but she was overall a more talented singer than Jessica Simpson. Jessica Simpson’s singing was flat and uninspired. Her new country twang sounded affected and contrived. I have heard more talented singers in the early audition rounds of American Idol. Whatever success she’s had, it was not due to her musical talent. Although I enjoy Jessica Simpson as a celebrity, I think she may be better off selling shoes.

Born in 1980, Jessica Simpson is a singer/actress who has achieved multi-platinum albums. She has remained in the headlines for her famous marriage to Nick Lachey. Jessica is also the older sister of Ashlee Simpson.

Although Jessica Simpson is not the most talented singer, she is still a successful and capable woman in her own right. She has successfully sold beauty and hair products on Home Shopping Network. Jessica Simpson also designs and markets boots and shoes. I’ve purchased a few of her shoes. Her designs are fun and great for parties. Jessica Simpson also plans to launch a line of lingerie and sleepwear.

Hellboy II Rakes in millions at box office

Sunday 13 July 2008 @ 5:19 pm

Superheroes battling inner demons often rule the box office. This time, the superhero was a demon as “Hellboy II: The Golden Army” pulled in $35.9 million to debut as the No. 1 weekend film.

Universal's

Universal’s “Hellboy” sequel, starring Ron Perlman and Selma Blair, took first spot at the box office.

Universal’s “Hellboy” sequel, starring Ron Perlman as the red-skinned devil fighting for the good guys, took over the top spot from Will Smith’s superhero tale “Hancock,” which slipped to second place with $33 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Sony’s “Hancock” raised its domestic total to $165 million.

Opening at No. 3 with $20.6 million was New Line’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth,” starring Brendan Fraser in an underground adventure shot in digital 3-D.

Eddie Murphy bombed with his comedy “Meet Dave,” a 20th Century Fox release that took in just $5.3 million. The movie features Murphy in dual roles as a tiny alien and his spaceship — which is designed to resemble a full-sized human for a visit to Earth.

“It was a tough concept to get across,” 20th Century Fox distribution executive Bert Livingston said of “Meet Dave,” which cost about $55 million to make. “It’s upsetting for all of us and for Eddie. He’s very funny in this. Just not enough people came.”

Science-fiction comedy has not been a kind genre for Murphy. His biggest bomb ever was the sci-fi tale “The Adventures of Pluto Nash,” which cost about $90 million and took in just $4.4 million during its entire run.

Brad Pitt became a father again.

Sunday 13 July 2008 @ 4:56 pm

Brad Pitt became a father again: A chameleon who never loses his charm.

Brad Pitt, who became a father again late Saturday when Angelina Jolie gave birth to twins, has shown he can be laid-back or uptight and can carry an indie flick or a blockbuster, but there’s one thing that stands out in his almost two-decades-old career — he’s a charmer.

Born 44 years ago in a middle-class family in Oklahoma, William Bradley Pitt studied journalism and advertising at the University of Missouri before following thousands of young Americans before him and trying his luck in Hollywood.

As for many would-be actors, the early days were tough and Pitt supported himself with a series of part-time jobs, including as a chauffeur and removal man, even dressing up in a chicken suit to advertise a fast-food chain.

But from 1987 the work started to trickle in, with bit parts in television series “Dallas” and “21 Jump Street” and a few low-budget movies.

It was in “Thelma and Louise” (1991) that Pitt got his break, displaying his talent — and half naked body — as the two-bit thief who seduces Geena Davis.

Secondary roles followed in “Kalifornia” (1993) and “True Romance” (1994) and he finally made it top of the bill later that year alongside Tom Cruise in “Interview with a Vampire,” and Anthony Hopkins in “Legends of the Fall.”

Britney Spears: Britney’s Clothes Up For Auction

Friday 4 July 2008 @ 5:42 pm

Britney’s Clothes Up For Bid

The following article is from www.accesshollywood.com:

Looking for a good way to “Break the Ice” with Britney Spears?

How about telling her you own some of her stuff.
Personal clothing once worn by Brit are just a few of the items going up for bid in the Gotta Have It! online Rock & Roll Pop Art Auction.

Among the items is a T-shirt worn by the pop star long before two marriages, two kids and a divorce, back when she was a cast member on the “New Mickey Mouse Club.”

The shirt, which Brit had given to her grandmother, is also signed by her former “MMC” co-stars, including Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and Keri Russell.

“Something like that has never come up for auction before. We expect it to go for between $15,000 and $20,000,” Gotta Have It! owner Ed Kosinski told People.

The shirt is also signed by Brit, inscribed with the message: “I love you grandma,” according to E! Online’s Marc Malkin.

Other items up for bid from Britney include outfits worn onstage during her “Drive Me Crazy” and “Oops, I Did It Again” tours, the orange coat and pants she donned for the 2000 Billboard Music Awards and even a blue and white Santa dress she wore for a holiday Pepsi ad that same year.

Proceeds from the sale of the Spears memorabilia, which was provided by Tri Star Sports and Entertainment Group on behalf of the singer, will go to a charity of Tri Star’s choosing, according to People.

But Britney isn’t the only celeb with some goodies up on the block.

More than 500 items will be auctioned off in the Gotta Have It! auction, including Madonna’s personal diary from 1985, stage costumes and hand-written lyrics from the Material Girl, an authentic Elvis Presley jumpsuit and a pair of denim jeans worn by Marilyn Monroe in the movie “River of No Return.”

The jeans had actually been given to Britney as a gift from designer Tommy Hilfiger – but now, they can be yours!
