Turning back the clock and getting an extra hour sleep protects people against having heart attacks the next working day, according to a research letter in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The heart attack rate is generally lower on the Monday after the transition out of daylight saving time, while setting the clock ahead in spring appears to have the opposite effect, according to Imre Janszky from the Karolinska Institute and Rickard Ljung from the National Board of Health and Welfare in Stockholm.
Daylight saving time is commonly used in the northern hemisphere to add an hour of daylight to the afternoons. More than 1.5 billion people turn their clocks forward in the spring and backward in the fall. These time shifts affect biologic rhythms, especially in the spring when more people were found to have heart attacks in the first three days after the change, researchers said.
“The most plausible explanation for our findings is the adverse effect of sleep deprivation on cardiovascular health,” Janszky and Ljung said. “Our data suggest that vulnerable people might benefit from avoiding sudden changes in their biologic rhythms.”
Daylight saving time benefits retailers and sporting events, and may cut traffic deaths and electricity use. It does, however, cause problems for dairy farmers because cows need to adapt to a new milking time, and for electronic instruments and medical devices, which must be programmed carefully to avoid causing harm, according to the study authors.
Sleep Deprived
The average sleep duration in Western societies decreased from 9 to 7.5 hours during the 20th century, which means people today are considered chronically sleep deprived, Janszky said. Monday is the day of the week associated with the highest risk of attacks because of the mental stress of starting a new work week and the increase in activity, the researchers said.
“Studies are warranted to examine the possibility that a more stable weekly pattern of waking up in the morning and going to sleep at night or a somewhat later wake-up time on Monday might prevent some acute myocardial infarctions,” Janszky and Ljung said.
The researchers used data from the Swedish registry of acute myocardial infarction to calculate incidences of heart attacks during each of the first seven days after the transitions and the average in the two weeks before and after.
The Swedish Council of Working Life and Social Research, Ansgarius Foundation, King Gustaf V and Queen Victoria’s Foundation and the Swedish Heart and Lung Foundation supported the research.

Obama to leave trail and visit sick grandmother
Democrat Barack Obama will leave the presidential campaign trail to visit his ailing 85-year-old grandmother in Hawaii, whose health has deteriorated in recent weeks, an aide said on Monday.
With two weeks left in an intense battle for the White House, Obama will hold a campaign event in Indianapolis on Thursday and then fly to Hawaii to see his grandmother before returning to campaigning on Saturday, aide Robert Gibbs said.
“Senator Obama’s grandmother, Madelyn Dunham, has always been one of the most important people in his life,” Gibbs said in a statement. “Along with his mother and his grandfather, she raised him in Hawaii from the time he was born until the moment he left for college.”
The campaign interruption comes as both candidates head into a final sprint for the November 4 election. Obama criticized Republican White House rival John McCain for a “say-anything, do-anything” political style as he launched a two-day tour to kick off early voting in Florida.
McCain told supporters in Missouri that “nothing is inevitable” and he could still beat Obama, who leads in national opinion polls as the pair began a frenzied race to the finish line.
Obama’s former Democratic rival, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, joined the Illinois senator at a rally of 50,000 people in Orlando.
“In the final days of campaigns, the say-anything, do-anything politics too often takes over,” Obama said. “We’ve seen it before. Hillary has been subject to it before.
“We’re seeing again today — ugly phone calls, misleading mail and TV ads, careless, outrageous statements — all aimed at keeping us from working together, all aimed at stopping change,” he said.

Conservative commentator Glenn Beck is leaving CNN Headline News for Fox News Channel, where he will host a weekday show starting next spring.
Beck will also do a weekend show. His daily radio show is heard by nearly 7 million people, ranking him fifth in popularity behind Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Michael Savage and Laura Schlessinger, according to Talkers magazine.
He sensed growth opportunities at Fox, which appeals to a more conservative audience and has many more viewers than CNN Headline News.
Although he won’t be in prime time, he gives Fox some bench strength in case there are any changes to its strong prime-time lineup.
Beck said he was trying to improve as a TV host and that he appreciated the chance to have Fox News chief Roger Ailes as a mentor.
“Roger felt that I had a real good sense and gut for what the average person in America is feeling and I think that needs to be reflected on television,” Beck said.
He said he wasn’t sure how his talk show would be different on Fox.
He’s also unclear how long he will remain on CNN Headline News’ schedule now that he’s a lame duck.
The network is also due to lose the host for its 6 p.m. newscast, Brit Hume, who is taking on a part-time role after the election.
Fox hasn’t said who will fill Hume’s time slot.
Beck’s departure is a blow for CNN Headline News, which first broke its continuous, half-hour newscast format in 2006 by starting Beck’s show.
It was an instant sensation, and led the network to launch another talk show with Nancy Grace, which now outrates Beck.
“I was such an island over at Headline News,” Beck said. “I had to bring my own audience, where I think there are a lot of people tuning in for comment on the day over at Fox.”
Beck’s CNN show airs twice each evening, the second time a rerun. The network is about to replace the rerun with a rerun of Lou Dobbs’ CNN show, but Beck said that had nothing to do with his decision to leave.
“Glenn has been a terrific employee and colleague to many of us at CNN,” said spokeswoman Janine Iamunno. “We wish him well.”

The symptoms of low potassium are weakness, confusion, muscular twitches, intestinal paralysis, and arrhythmias. If it is severe muscular paralysis may occur. One reason someone can have low potassium is taking diuretics because it is passed in the urine. Other reasons for potassium loss are: alcoholism, using laxatives too much, extreme vomiting or diarrhea, congestive heart failure, and depletion of magnesium. For the elderly when they take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories and ACE inhibitors they should keep check of their potassium levels. Because there is a decrease in kidney function with age the elderly are at a higher risk for developing hyperkalemia, which is too much potassium in the blood stream.
In the U.S.A. out of five people that are hospitalized one of them has low potassium. Of the people that go to the doctor’s office and don’t get hospitalized fourteen percent of them possess potassium levels that are a little low. Looking at these statistics it is clear that many Americans need to be careful about getting enough potassium. These are foods rich in potassium: honeydew, artichoke, avocado, kiwi, lima beans, banana, watermelon, prunes, cantaloupe, spinach, tomatoes, winter, squash, salmon, trout, cod, almonds, and Brazil nuts. A tablespoon of blackstrap molasses has twenty grams of potassium.
There are other foods that are rich in potassium too. The variety of foods with a good amount of potassium in them makes it easier for people to find a few foods they like that provide significant amounts. If for some reason a person is on a diet that restricts them from getting enough potassium from food, he can turn to potassium supplements. Athletes need more potassium and may want to supplement.
