Of the people that go to the doctor’s office and don’t get hospitalized fourteen percent of them possess potassium levels that are a little low. Looking at these statistics it is clear that many Americans need to be careful about getting enough potassium. These are foods rich in potassium: honeydew, artichoke, avocado, kiwi, lima beans, banana, watermelon, prunes, cantaloupe, spinach, tomatoes, winter, squash, salmon, trout, cod, almonds, and Brazil nuts. A tablespoon of blackstrap molasses has twenty grams of potassium.
There are other foods that are rich in potassium too. The variety of foods with a good amount of potassium in them makes it easier for people to find a few foods they like that provide significant amounts. If for some reason a person is on a diet that restricts them from getting enough potassium from food, he can turn to potassium supplements. Athletes need more potassium and may want to supplement.
